Get better and stay healthy with medicinal mushrooms.

Dr. Susanne Ehlers, Spezialistin für Vitalpilze

Did you know that some special mushrooms are being used for healing? These vital mushrooms are the strongest immune system modulators and are applied with cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, even with cancer as well as allergies and lot’s of other “civilisation diseases” like diabetes, obesity, sleeping disorders, congestion, etc.

Expert mycotherapist Dr. Suzanne Ehlers informs us about alternative mushroom medicine or mycotherapy and its products. The word “mykos” originates from Greek and means “mushroom”. Mycotherapy is a relatively new term and cannot be found in many reference books. However, the content of the term – healing with mushrooms – is as old as humanity.

They do sound a bit exotic, the names of the most important mushrooms. We have available: Shiitake, Hericium, Maitake, Cordyceps and of course the famous Ling Zhi better known as Reishi. No other mushroom owns such far ranging properties and applications on so many ailments. Since more and more people in Europe and the USA trust natural medicine, the share of people that have experienced the power of mushrooms and who have used it to heal or to stay healthy has risen instead of the chemical medication and the funnelling of patients by medical institutions. Some of the benefits of using mushrooms are: the gentle natural mycotherapy heals integrally, activates the self-healing process and has no side effects whatsoever. Mycotherapy especially works positively on chronic diseases where it has had remarkable successes. Mushrooms have always played a big role in the history of mankind. Everybody desired and feared them at the same time – as a natural beneficial resource on one side and as a toxin on the other side. Without the help of several kinds of fungus, the production of important foods like, for example: cheese or wine, would be impossible. Modern medicine wouldn’t have antibiotics – unimaginable!Alone penicillin, a metabolite of the mildew Penicillium notatum, has saved millions of people!

Mushrooms belong to the eldest of natural medicine. Even the ice-age man “Ötzi” carried ‘birch polypore’ mushroom, probably because of its haemostatic and disinfectant properties with him in his first-aid kit. However, in Europe the knowledge of the healing powers of mushrooms was forgotten by the end of the mediaeval times. Down to the present day only a few mushrooms are used as medicine.

In contrast we’ve got the Asian traditional medicine. In China and Japan mushrooms have been used for over 4000 years with amazing results for avoidance as well as alleviation and healing of a large list of diseases. Still today they are used for the fortification of the immune system, healing of cardiovascular diseases, for regulation of blood pressure and blood sugar levels, strengthening and detoxifying of the liver, treatment of allergies, reducing obesity and most of all to improve vitality especially with cancer patients. Additionally Reishi and Shiitake are seen as extremely valuable foods and are considered “fountains of youth”. As a matter of fact, the number of physically and mentally fit centenarians in Asia is extremely high.

That is why the interest for Asian medical mushrooms in Europe, the USA and Canada started a few decades ago. Some mushrooms from other regions like the Agaricus (ABM) from Brazil and the Coprinus were added. Against the background of globalisation, a Renaissance of ‘alternative mushroom medicine’ was initiated in the West.Research has detected more than 100 valuable substances in mushrooms which is just a small portion. Respectively there are very unique combinations of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, fibre, essential amino acids and secondary ingredients with high bioactivity. There is a simple explanation for this: mushrooms build, next to plants and animals, their own special Kingdom and many of its highly effective substances are not found elsewhere. The equally valuable natural substances, in terms of nutritional physiology, affect vital bodily functions and can slow down the aging process and aid with recovery in numerous amounts of ailments and this without side effects.
