Southern Ginseng
(Gynostemma pentaphyllum)

A rediscovered medicinal herb from China and Japan, with Ginseng-like power, causes furore. Gynostemma pentaphyllum is its botanical name.
In China the earliest records of Gynostemma date back to the year 1400 A.D. An infusion of the sweet-herbal tasting leaves has been drunk daily in the mountain regions of south China, as a vitalising and rejuvenating tea.
Its name in this region is “Xiancao” which means “immortality herb” and the people there say: “It works like ginseng but it is better than ginseng!”
In China’s Guizhou province the reason for the above-average number of centenarians is traced back to the regular consumption of Gynostemma tea. 900 of the 3700 centenarians live in the Guizhou province.
In 1976, by pure chance, the substance for which Ginseng became famous was discovered in Gynostemma: Ginsenoside. It was discovered by scientists when they were examining Gynostemma as a candidate for a low calorie sweetener.
In the ensuing years this herb has not only been consumed in China and Japan but also increasingly in the USA as an alternative to expensive ginseng. Its ingredients are indeed partially identical to ginseng.
Gynostemma, also known as Jiaogulan, even contains its own class of saponins, the so-called Gypenosides, which are basically responsible for Gynostemma’s benefits. Jiaogulan tea is very tasty and can be brewed out of dried or fresh leaves.
As an adaptogen, Jiaogulan has no side effects and always works in conjunction and balance with the body’s systems. It is also called “ginseng for women” because it is more agreeable to women. While ginseng only consists of about 20 saponins, in Gynostemma there are over 80 saponins detectable. These saponins are natural, organic compounds that are, amongst other things, involved in hormone synthesis.
Here is the impressive list of Gynostemma’s demonstrated health effects:
Jiaogulan contains a range of compensatory working saponins that are almost chemically identical with the ones found in ginseng (Panax ginseng) but it also has a unique class, the Gypenosides. They prevent stress related diseases.
A stimulation of the body’s own enzyme, superoxide dismutase (SOD), which is a highly effective anti-oxidant, was proven.
Improves the pumping capacity of the heart and thereby, the general blood circulation.
- Against high blood pressure:
The blood pressure is kept (like ginseng) in its normal range, low blood pressure is being raised.
Gynostemma drops principally the LDL-levels and also the triglycerides. It results in weight loss in cases of obesity.
Against stroke and heart attack:
Jiaogulan prevents the clumping of the platelets so that the danger of life threatening blood clots drops considerably. It is also effective in prevention of thromboses.
Immune system enhancement:
The activity of the lymphocytes, in sick as well as healthy people, is stimulated.
- Haematopoietic (blood-building)
Especially the manufacturing of white blood cells is encouraged. It is helpful with anastasis after chemotherapy.
It decreases blood sugar and blood lipids levels.
The ginsenoside ‘Rh2’ is a cancer repressive glycoside which has 0,001% presence in Panax ginseng. Gynostemma pentaphyllum contains exactly the same glycoside but in a much higher concentration.
Compensatory action on the nervous system:
Over used nerves are calmed, powerless ones are stimulated. The collectivity of actions causes a better compatibility of stress in the body. It increases the endurance performance for athletes.
Because of the cooperation between better capillary and heart blood flow/improvement of haematopoietic and other factors, the body’s metabolic systems are more efficient and thus healthier.
